There’s no question that America’s increasing reliance on generic drugs is saving billions of dollars. But are the generic versions of heavily advertised brand-name drugs as safe, effective and reliable as their expensive counterparts?
The answer is an unqualified “yes,” says the director of the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration Office of Generic Drugs (FDA).
They’re safe and they are effective, and people should take them with confidence.”
Rigorous testing of generics goes on during more than 3,500 inspections of U.S. drug making facilities each year. “It’s important to understand that the generic companies are state-of-the-art companies, “And the inspections that our field inspectors do are the same inspections that they do on the [brand name] drug-manufacturing companies. So that means that the generic companies have to be up to the same standards as the brand-name products.
“The fact is that the generics manufacturers make a very high-quality product. And it’s only because they don’t have to spend the money on the clinical trials that they can actually market their product for a lesser price.” The brand-name maker completed the clinical trials years earlier.
